Sunday is laundry day. I decided to be all efficient and disciplined and started before noon (instead of after dinner, which is what I usually do).

I near the bottom of the stairs and I see water on the floor. Lots of it. Coming from places I had never seen water come in before.

I dump the laundry on a dry spot and investigate. The water seems to be coming from the furnace room and the office.

The office is where I have been keeping all my books. In boxes. Stacked up from the floor.

Yeah. I spent the next two or three hours getting the dry boxes off the floor and the wet boxes opened and empty. The rest of the basement looks like a library exploded. Surprisingly, most of my books are fine. There are some that got humid, others that got damp and some that got soaked. I've got them spread out as best I can. There are a couple dozen old magazines that are total losses - basically wet bricks, but that's it for loses. That, and lots of boxes.

I don't think the water has been getting in for very long. While a lot of the boxes are wet, the water was only just starting to get the contents (with a few exceptions).

As for where the water is coming from, I think it is coming up through the floor, not down the foundation walls. There is no standing water against the outside of the house. Also, I dried the floor with the towels going into the laundry. When I came back, I could clearly see where the new water was coming from, and it is the seams of the tiles. This would also explain the rather odd pattern of which boxes got the wettest. I have no idea how I'm going to ameliorate or fix this.

Not how I wanted to unpack my stuff.

In other home related news, I'm getting a new dishwasher. I secured one of the state appliance rebates. My current dishwasher basically runs fine, but it the same model of dishwasher from when I was growing up in Texas - GE Pot Scrubber. In all likelihood, the dishwasher is 20-30 years old.
