Horribly mundane problems

The food in the fridge isn't quite cool enough.  It's still running, and the freezer is staying frozen, so the compressor must still be working.

So, I've spent some time just looking at the interior of the fridge.  I think the problem must be the thick layer of frost covering the vents at the back of the freezer.  It's the easy answer.  Also, and easy solution:  empty the freezer into the fridge, turn it off, and leave the freezer door open while I go to karate.  Once it defrosts, clean it up, load it back up. and see how it is tomorrow.

I hope that is all that is wrong.  I really don't want to shell out for a new fridge right now.

Have you looked at the door gasket? That was a problem with our last fridge. M

I did check to make sure the door was sealing properly, which it was. Checking the quality of the gasket will be next, but the freezer really does need to be de-frosted.

Have you pulled the fridge out and vacuumed the metal radiator grill on the back recently? When dust and stuff builds up on that, the coolant has a harder time getting rid of its heat to cool the refrigerator.

Do you know how old it is?

Umn, never? At least not since I moved in. I know it needs to be done, and is on the list of things to do. But, since the freezer was maintaining temp just fine, and the fridge wasn't, I went looking to see how the air must move through. It looks like the cold air is moved from the freezer to the fridge. With the vents frozen over, not enough cooled air was able to move through. So, clear out the vents, turn it all back on, and see what happens. If the problem persists, check the gaskets, pull out the fridge and clean the external grills, and if it still doesn't remedy the issue, call for service.

It's a Kenmore, and I'm guessing about 8 years old. I have the manual in my files, I just haven't pulled it out yet.

They're buggers. And they get everywhere. And a circle of salt won't keep them out. (but a bottle of A-1 Sauce will...)

I bought a new fridge last night - same kind of issue but it wasn't getting any colder - I think mine was the compressor.

So far, with the vents clear of all-encasing frost, the fridge itself is getting and staying cold. There is a rattle now, but it goes away when I push on the freezer vents, so I'm not too worried.
